Artist Statement

People conceal themselves in photos to avoid being put into a vulnerable position. Struggling with their self-image and outward appearance, some are afraid of getting criticized for what they do and wear.

Black and white photography allows me to focus on value, shape, and contrast to highlight the emotions the person is feeling. As a college student in 2023, I began photographing my surroundings and daily life showing myself in places where I can be vulnerability and be myself. I planned my compositions in response to the spaces I spent the most time in, including bathrooms, classrooms, and my bedroom. I used materials like my hands, water, or mirrors to conceal further highlighting myself being unguarded of what others might think. Mirrors and reflective mylar were also used throughout the installation to reflect the viewer back to themselves, sometimes clearly and sometimes also distorting their image.
